Seniors are becoming the new face of the Cowichan region’s housing crisis
With an aging population and an escalating housing crisis, more low-income seniors in the Cowichan region are facing homelessness.
The Cowichan Valley’s housing market has become increasingly unaffordable, putting a financial strain on residents of all ages and incomes.
But among those who rent in the region, senior citizens have been deemed “especially vulnerable to unstable housing conditions.” They have more difficulty living on a limited fixed income, subsidizing their pensions and adapting to the difficulties of housing shortages.
In this multi-part series, The Discourse digs into why low-income seniors are struggling more than ever to find housing and what needs to change to help them.
