Introducing Discourse Media’s latest hire

Lauren Kaljur joins the newsroom with a background in collaborative investigations on energy and the environment.

Lauren Kaljur joins Discourse Media as a reporter with expertise in investigative stories on the environment, resource economy and Indigenous affairs.

“I love to tell complex stories through multi-dimensional characters and creative formats. Discourse Media is the perfect place to craft and showcase this kind of work,” she says.

For the past year, Kaljur has been a key member of a collaborative investigative team producing a groundbreaking series for the Toronto Star, Global News and National Observer known as the Price of Oil. Under the leadership of Patti Sonntag of the New York Times, she has been tracing money and influence in the industry, investigating worker and resident safety and surfacing narratives through which to relay findings to a national audience.

Prior to obtaining her Master’s of Journalism from the University of British Columbia, she hosted and produced her own world news radio show on the Vancouver community station, CiTR 101.9 FM.

She further developed her radio and interview chops at CBC Vancouver radio current affairs and her writing at the Yukon News and Arctic Deeply, where she reported on environmental, Indigenous and Russian Arctic stories. Her radio documentary about trauma earned her a CBC Mazurin Award.

Kaljur was one of 29 journalists selected from across North America for the News21 fellowship. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, she produced multimedia stories on water contamination in Indigenous communities across the United States under the tutelage of veteran editors from the Washington Post and Houston Chronicle.

Stay tuned for her work as she supports energy and environment storytellers for Discourse’s new Local News Fellowship and weaves together a national investigation based on this coverage.[end]
