Friday, Jan. 23, 7:30 p.m.: Victoria Symphony will present The Planets – Symphony in Space, with the support of the Vancouver Island Symphony at The Port Theatre. Music includes selections from movies such as John William’s Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, James Horner’s Apollo 13, Calvin Custer’s Star Trek Through the Years and Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Tickets cost $39.50.

Thursday, Jan. 22, 9 p.m.: Ted Kim will play at The Nanaimo Bar. Tickets cost $10. 

Friday, Jan. 23, 7 p.m.: Caveman & The Banshee, Chronic Fatigue, Night Mirrors and Lords Of Apathy will play an all-ages punk show at The Globe Live Studio. Tickets cost $25.

Friday, Jan. 23, 8 p.m.: The Hans Verhoeven Quartet with Mike Allen will play at The Vault Cafe. Tickets cost $15.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 2 p.m.: Cascadian folk duo West My Friend will play an intimate house show on Milton Street (address emailed to ticket holders 24 hours before the show). Tickets cost $25. 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 7 p.m.: The James Vickers Band will play an all-ages show at The Queen’s. Tickets cost $15. 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m.: Michaela Chung will perform a comedy show at the Sweet Spot Lounge. Tickets cost $25. 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 8 p.m.: La Chinga, Start With The Cobra, Fly The Insect and Ry Patrick Haint will play a hard rocking show at The Globe Live Studio. Tickets cost $15.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 9 p.m.: Mr. Pinkus, Summer Babe and Mania (members of Behaviors, Shearing Pinx and Earthball) will play improv, krautrock and indie scuzz at The Vault Cafe. Tickets cost $15. 

Sunday, Jan. 25, 3 p.m.: Ann Vriend will headline the Sunday Blues Jam at The Queen’s. Tickets cost $10 or free for blues jammers. 

Monday, Jan. 26, 8 p.m.: Choir! Choir! Choir! Will get the audience singing at The Port Theatre. Tickets start at $39. 

Tuesday, Jan. 27, 8 p.m.: Indigenous comedy group The Bad Apples will bring their show to the Green Olive. Tickets cost $20.

Friday, Jan. 23, 7 p.m. to  9 p.m.: An opening reception for the exhibit Bleached by the Sun: Perspectives on Chinatown will be held at the Nanaimo Art Gallery. Admission is free.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.: Curators Jesse Birch and Imogene Lim, along with exhibition artists will hold an informal community gathering to celebrate the exhibition Bleached by the Sun: Perspectives on Chinatown at the Nanaimo Art Gallery. Admission is free.

Saturday, Jan. 24, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.: Joëlle Rabu brings her new play I Don’t Belong Here – Stories Beyond the Edge of Forgetting to The Port Theatre. The play will “guide audiences through a tender journey of lost identity, unexpected humour, and the profound need for connection.” There is also a matinee show at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. Tickets cost $34.

Thursday, Jan. 22, 5:30 p.m.: Join Amanda for a discussion group to ponder life’s big questions at the Mindfulness Book Club at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library.

Friday, Jan. 23, noon: Learn Hul’q’umi’num’ with Jane Alcorn (Penelakut) and Stephanie Hohn as they provide an hour of introductory Hul’q’umi’num’ language and story in the Vancouver Island University Library’s Madrona Room (322). Registration is required. 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 1 p.m.: Explore bold colors and flowing designs in Alcohol Ink for Beginners at the Gabriola Island Library. The program is free but registration is required. 

Saturday, Jan. 24, 7:15 p.m.: The VIU Mariners hockey teamplays the Logan Lake Miners at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Tickets cost $12 or $7 with student ID. 

Sunday, Jan. 25, 2 p.m.: Construct a cardboard building from the ground up at the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s Art Lab Sunday. Free for gallery members, $5 for non-members. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tuesday, Jan. 27, noon: Weekly drop-in meditation for beginners at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library.

Tuesday, Jan. 27, 4:30 p.m.: Youth between 12 and 18 years of age can join the Library Youth Club at the Nanaimo Harbourfront Library every Tuesday. Create art, play board games, watch movies and more. Register here.

Wednesday, Jan. 28, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.: The Island Roots Farmers Market will be held inside the Centennial Building at Beban Park.
