On Nov. 23, 2020, we launched a petition to get 5000 people in Nanaimo to say that they want in-depth local news by December 4. Yesterday, we surpassed our halfway mark. And today, for Giving Tuesday, we are excited to announce an ongoing funds matching initiative for our Founding Supporters.
The Discourse is looking for six partners to become Founding Supporters of The Discourse Nanaimo by contributing $5,000. Now, those contributions can be doubled.
A grant provided by Vancouver Foundation will be used to match up to $25,000 for organizations who contribute to The Discourse Nanaimo as Founding Supporters.
“We are thrilled to be able to support in-depth local news during this time of ongoing uncertainty,” says Vancouver Foundation President and CEO Kevin McCort.
Founding Supporters will be acknowledged with their logo on The Discourse Nanaimo website and weekly newsletter for the first year of our operation. We don’t rely on traditional advertising and our content is not placed behind a paywall, so Founding Supporters enable us to focus on delivering quality journalism.
“We’re encouraged by how Nanaimo is rallying around this vision for better local news,” says Erin Millar, founder and CEO of The Discourse. “We’re committed to responding with meaningful journalism that contributes to the health of this community by building bridges, holding power to account, highlighting solutions and amplifying untold stories.”
The $25,000 funding allocation from the Vancouver Foundation stems from a 3-year Systems Change Grant awarded to C4C Canada in partnership with The Discourse in 2018 with a goal for disrupting digital news media in B.C. and reconnecting the public in dialogue.
