Survey: Nanaimo’s rent problem

Your feedback will inform our investigation into the rental affordability crisis.
Lauren Kaljur January 13, 2021

People in Nanaimo voted for us to dig into rental affordability for our next investigation. Often times, news coverage of the housing crunch focuses on home ownership. What about the many who have no other choice but to rent?

By filling out this survey, you’re helping us better understand the scope of the problem and the solutions underway in Nanaimo from the perspective of renters. The more people we hear from the better, so please share this survey with people you know. You have until Jan. 31 to have your say.

About The Discourse

The Discourse is focused on truly local news that brings the community together. We don’t just cover the latest story—we focus on slow journalism that serves a community’s needs. In other words, we ask you what you want to know and produce in-depth stories on the topics that matter to you.

We started serving Vancouver Island by creating  The Discourse Cowichan, where we’ve been sharing stories for nearly three years. Reader support makes our work possible, so we are accountable to our audience—not advertisers. We’re passionate about building a new kind of media that better reflects us all — because we’re connected to these communities, too.

Reporter Julie Chadwick cares about the Nanaimo region. As a former reporter for the Nanaimo Daily News, she understands the importance of local journalism and what’s lost when a local newspaper shuts down. Above all, she and her colleagues at The Discourse are committed to journalism that starts with listening and with telling in-depth, rigorously fact-checked stories that matter to people who live here.
