The Cowichan Valley fell silent this Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, as hundreds of people gathered in Charles Hoey Park in Duncan for a ceremony and wreath laying to honour Canada’s living and fallen veterans.

A marching contingent of cadets, Legion members and current and serving veterans carried flags to the cenotaph where all participants and onlookers observed two minutes of silence marked by the siren of a firetruck at the start. Crowds also witnessed a flyover of three planes during the moment of silence.

The Quw’utsun Secondary School band played the national anthem while Brenna Jantzen sung along.

George Brewster, a 102-year-old veteran who flew 66 successful missions in Spitfires during the Second World War, recited John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields.

Following the wreath laying, Jantzen led the crowd in singing God Save the King. The Colour Party of cadets, RCMP and military personnel ended the ceremony by marching up Canada Avenue and on to Station Street.
